Three Eminent European Scholars Honoured by IAGG-ER

The awards for Advances in Gerontology and Geriatrics go to Teimuraz Lezhava (Biological Sciences), John Young (Clinical Sciences), Hans-Werner Wahl (Social and Behavioral Sciences)
The aims of the “IAGG-ER Awards for Advances in Gerontology and Geriatrics” are to elevate the prestige and significance of gerontological science and to secure public acknowledgement of the excellence and achievements of gerontologists in Europe. The Advanced Scholar Awards of IAGG-ER are given to three scientists who have expanded the significance and quality of European science in biological ageing research, clinical ageing research, and socio-behavioral ageing research. European scientists who have contributed most significantly to the development of gerontology and geriatrics can be nominated for this award. Three eminent scientists were chosen for this prestigious award.

The IAGG-ER Award for Advances in Biological Ageing Research will be given to Professor Teimuraz Lezhava. Professor Lezhava is a biologist and leader of the Institute of Genetics at the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (Georgia). He is well known for his genetic conception of aging and his groundbreaking research involving human chromosomes, telemores and aging.

The IAGG-ER Award for Advances in Clinical Ageing Research will be given to Professor John Young. Professor Young is an Emeritus Professor of Elderly Care Medicine, University of Leeds (UK). In his scientific research he has addressed key questions of geriatric research, especially in respect to elderly care and stroke in old age.

The IAGG-ER Award for Advances in Social and Behavioral Ageing Research will be given to Professor Hans-Werner Wahl. Professor Wahl is a Senior Professor in Psychology at the Heidelberg University (Germany). In his prolific scientific career, he has published cutting-edge and innovative research about the role of physical-technological environments for aging well, adaptational processes in the context of age-related chronic functional loss, and processes of age-awareness in a lifespan perspective.
